Tripoli is the capital, largest city and principle port of Libya. Tripoli is an ancient city that offers a variety of archaelogical sites. The city was founded in the 7th century by Phoenicians. It was later ruled by the Carthaginians, the Romans, the Ottamons, and the Spanish.

Near modern Tripoli are the ancient cities of Sabra'tah, Leptis Magna, and Libdah.
